The Moody Method is tried and true. We exercise that with our Hilger-Watts Autocollimator measuring every surface plate 18" x 18" or larger in Union Jack style. For smaller plates, same style- different instrument, a repeat reading gage with a precision Mahr Supramess Dial Indicator does the job.
