For Inspection not Sanding

Do not use surface plates as sanding tables. This can cause irreparable wear. Such wear will require the plate to be replaced

Cover the Plate

Vinyl covers are available online for a reasonable price. DIY wood covers work as well. We especially recommend covering plates located in final inspection or quality labs. This helps to prevent unnecessary wear from dust and debris. It also protects the surface from uninformed non-quality department personnel.

Periodical Rotation for Heavy Use

Surface plates are heavy, but if it can be done, rotating them helps to save on calibration costs. It allows workers to continue using the plate in the same location with respect to the work area. Otherwise, like for monolithic granite plates, periodically shifting the work area around the plate accomplishes this same feat.

Don't Overuse One Section

Overuse of a single spot creates holes and dips. Fixing them requires a significantly longer time commitment to lap back into tolerance. Creating this condition in plates leads to costlier calibrations. To flatten a surface plate, the rest of the plate must be lapped down to match the lowest point.

Keep the Surface Plate Clear of Parts

Do not place anything on the surface plate except gauges and other measuring equipment. This rule applies unless a technician is actively measuring a part. To preserve the integrity of the surface when placing a part onto the plate, be gentle. Avoid applying any added pressure.

Not a Dinner Table

Surface plates must not be used as a countertop for storage or as a dining table for lunch.

Maintain Uniform Environmental Conditions

Uniform environmental conditions offer best metrological results. Avoid setting up surface plates under direct sunlight or in range of ac/heating fans or draughts.

Stick to a Regular Calibration Schedule

To truly understand the condition of your precision granite surface plate, you must have it calibrated. This calibration should be performed by an experienced professional. Knowing the condition of the surface allows for repeatable measurements and best precision.

How To Clean A Precision Granite Surface Plate?

Keep your precision granite surface plate accurate and long-lasting with proper cleaning! Regular maintenance prevents dust buildup, abrasion, and measurement errors. Follow these safe steps using alcohol-based or manufacturer-recommended cleaners (avoid water-based solutions).

1. Clear the Surface Remove all inspection equipment, parts, tools, and debris from the granite surface plate. A clean start ensures no scratches or contamination during cleaning. 🧹

2. Apply Cleaning Solution Spray or apply your chosen granite-safe cleaner (e.g., Starrett Surface Plate Cleaner, denatured alcohol, or isopropyl alcohol-based formula). Use sparingly—avoid excess liquid. 🧴

3. Scrub Gently Use a clean shop towel or rag and apply firm pressure to scrub the entire surface. For heavily soiled or tough spots: Switch to a medium-to-heavy duty non-abrasive scouring pad (like 3M Scotch-Brite). Work in circular motions for even cleaning. 🧽

4. Dry Thoroughly Wipe off the cleaner and residue with a separate clean, dry shop towel or rag. Remove as much moisture as possible to prevent absorption. 🧻

5. Repeat if Needed If dirt, oil, or debris remains after the first pass, repeat steps 2–4 until the surface is visibly clean. Persistence ensures a spotless precision surface. 🔄

6. Final Polish & Fine Cleanup Once fully dry, use a soft microfiber cloth to remove any remaining fine particles and complete drying. Microfiber is lint-free and perfect for final touch-up. ✨

7. Test for Readiness Rub a clean hand gently across the top of the plate. If it feels perfectly smooth with no grit or stickiness → Your surface plate is ready for use! Hand test detects invisible residue better than the eye. 👋

* Important Note If using a non-recommended cleaning solution (especially those without alcohol), allow ample drying time (several hours) before placing equipment or parts back on the plate. Solutions that soak into the porous granite can cause rust on metal tools if not fully evaporated.
